Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the Scioto Valley School-Based Health Clinic?
A: The Valley View Health Centers School-Based Health Clinic (SBHC) is located right inside Scioto Valley Local Schools to make it easier for students to get the care they need. Our clinic provides many of the same services as a pediatrician’s office—annual checkups, sick visits, behavioral health support, and vaccinations.
Important: The SBHC does not replace your child’s pediatrician or family doctor. If your family doesn’t have a primary care provider, we can help you find one.

Q: Why add a health clinic at our school?
A: Healthy students learn better. Illnesses and health concerns can cause kids to miss class or require parents to miss work for appointments. By having a Valley View provider in the school building, students can be seen quickly and return to class sooner. Research shows that when children are healthy, they do better academically—this clinic helps us nurture every child’s potential.

Q: Who provides care at the SBHC?
A: Valley View Health Centers operates the SBHC and provides care for all Scioto Valley Local School District students. A licensed nurse practitioner or other qualified healthcare provider will typically see your child. They can diagnose illnesses, provide treatment, and prescribe medication when needed.

Q: Does this replace the school nurse?
A: Absolutely not! The school nurse remains an essential part of student health care, handling first aid and immediate needs during the day. The SBHC simply adds more services—like diagnosing and treating illnesses, managing ongoing conditions, and providing prescriptions. Together, the nurse and SBHC team ensure students receive comprehensive care.

Q: How will parents/guardians know what care their child received?
A: Parents and guardians are always included. No care is provided without your consent. You’re welcome to attend visits, but it isn’t required. After each appointment, we’ll call you with updates and send home a summary of what happened, including any medications or follow-up instructions. Your trust in our care is very important to us.

Q: How does billing work?
A: The SBHC works like a regular doctor’s office. We accept Medicaid and most insurance plans. No child will ever be denied care because of an inability to pay. If you need help with financial options, we’ll assist you.
A School-Based Health Clinic (SBHC) works alongside the school’s nurse and clinic staff to help students stay healthy, remain in the classroom, and succeed academically. The SBHC provides comprehensive medical services similar to those offered at a pediatrician’s office—all conveniently located at school.
